Sony drops new ‘Ghostbusters’ teaser trailer. Here’s who the villain might be

There’s a new “Ghostbusters” film on the way.

Jason Reitman, who directed “Juno,” announced Tuesday that he will direct the follow-up to the 1984 original film, according to CNN.

• “Finally got the keys to the car. #GB20,” he tweeted.
• Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original film.
• Jason Reitman will co-write the film, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Details: So far, it appears the film will be “set in the world that was saved decades previously by the proton pack-wearing working stiffs in the original 1984 movie.”

• “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” the younger Reitman said, according to EW. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ’80s happened in the ’80s, and this is set in the present day.”

• The film will drop in summer 2020.

Before: The last “Ghostbusters” film hit the screen in 2016 with an all-female cast. Jim Bennett called the film “pleasant but pointless” in his review for the Deseret News.

A look ahead: Jason Reitman said his film won’t be connected to the 2016 film. It will have all-new characters with a connection to the first film.

• “I have so much respect for what Paul (Feig) created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film,” Reitman said.

• But that film, according to Bennett’s review, teased the sequel.

• “Sony executives still insist that, regardless, a sequel is on its way, and the end-credits scene teased the evil ghost from the 1984 film as the next villain, so we can expect another competent retread,” Bennett wrote.
