710 ESPN Seattle Wins Celebration of Service to America Award for Support of Coaching Boys into Men
Aug 24, 2020
SEATTLE, WA – 710 ESPN Seattle is proud to have received a National Celebration of Service to America Award for Major Market Radio, as announced the NAB Leadership Foundation’s nationally televised Celebration of Service to America Awards ceremony on August 22, 2020. This award recognizes the sports station’s partnership with Coaching Boys into Men.
Coaching Boys into Men is an evidence-based prevention program that trains and motivates high school coaches to teach their young male athletes healthy relationship skills, and that “violence never equals strength.” Collectively with Athletes as Leaders, a program with a complimentary focus for female athletes, the Station along with the non-profit, professional teams and other sponsors have formed a coalition called Team Up Washington.
“We are proud to stand alongside heroes like Ward Urion and Rebecca Milliman from Team Up,” said Kyle Brown, Program Director for 710 ESPN Seattle. “Their tireless efforts are making a difference in the way future generations will handle gender violence. In teaching respect, they deserve ours.”
710 ESPN Seattle’s support for this program included fundraising and awareness campaigns, as well as the facilitation of opportunities with the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners. The Station also hosted a coaches training session in July of 2019. The original goal was to recruit five new schools to participate in the program, however, the support resulted in 24 new schools in 17 school districts with 247 coaches, mentors and advocates attending trainings in 2019.
“The partnership began because we recognized that while domestic violence is often considered a “women’s issue,” it can’t be prevented unless men became allies,” said Mike Salk, Director of Programming for Bonneville Seattle Media Group. “We were excited to use our platform to talk to men and help prevent domestic violence. Because this program focuses on teaching high school athletes about consent and respect, it was an even more natural fit for the station. We have a unique ability to market to those interested in sports and that allowed us reach coaches, parents and student athletes.”
“On behalf of Bonneville Seattle, we are grateful and humbled to receive this tremendous award from the NAB Leadership Foundation,” said Cathy Cangiano, SVP/Market Manager for Bonneville Seattle Media Group. “Knowing it was an all-station effort with a sincere motivation to help with this important issue of domestic violence prevention, I couldn’t be more proud of the 710 ESPN Seattle staff and leadership. This is an incredible moment for our team and partners and I am confident this is just the beginning of the impact we can make in this area.”
