iPhone leaks suggest major change to chargers

A new Apple iPhone leak suggests we may soon be getting an iPhone that accepts both USB-C and Lightning charger support, The Verge reports.

Japanese blog Mac Otakara reported that the new iPhone models are compatible with both 18W USB-C chargers and a Lightning to USB-C cable.

“That would make a lot of sense. Apple may not be ready to ditch Lightning just yet, but it looks like the company could try making iOS users’ lives a little bit easier,” according to The Verge.

Apple currently ships new smartphones with the 5W cube charger that’s existed for several years. However, Apple designed its newer iPhones, starting with the iPhone 8, to accept fast-charging capabilities through the Lightning cable, according to The Verge.

Apple brought the USB-C to the iPad Pro and tablet line last year, according to The Verge. But iPhone users need to buy an 18W charger and Lightning to USB-C adapter for $50.

So should you believe the recent iPhone leaks? According to Forbes, Mac Otakara is a reliable leaker in the iPhone community.

“How reliable in Macotakara? It has had some misses, but the site continues to earn respect for its deep links into Apple’s Asian supply chain and it was famous for being first to leak that Apple was dropping the headphone jack,” according to Forbes. “As such, it is always worth taking seriously.”
