Spotify pranks users with ‘Discocover Weekly’ playlists
Apr 01, 2019
If your Discover Weekly playlist felt a little groovier than usual today, it’s because you’ve been punked by Spotify.
What happened: Instead of providing users with their regular Discover Weekly playlist Monday, Spotify took users to Funkytown with an April Fools’ Day prank playlist composed entirely of disco covers.
How's your Discocover Weekly today? 🕺
— Spotify (@Spotify) April 1, 2019
- The playlist, titled “Discocover Weekly,” includes disco covers like “Toccata and Funk in D Minor” (Walter Murphy), “Stayin’ Alive” (Lizzo) and “Princess Leia’s Theme – Disco Version” (Geoff Love & His Orchestra).
- The playlist replaced the automatically curated weekly playlist Spotify compiles to match user interests.
The prank got some social media users pretty good.
Spotify has gone crazy with my Discover Weekly playlist. It basically recommended a ton of weird covers of 70s songs. W an emphasis on disco. No thank you.

congrats to Spotify on having the only good April Fools Day joke with this "Discocover Weekly" playlist, which I'm dying over pic.twitter.com/bJ4Fo6PU4N

Took me about five songs to realize my Discover Weekly playlist is an April Fool's joke. Thank you no.
