Apple unveils Apple TV Plus streaming service. Is Netflix involved?

Apple announced a new streaming service called Apple TV Plus on Monday, which will house the company’s original content and could eventually compete with Netflix, according to The Associated Press.

The new service will bring different video streaming services and cable subscriptions together, The Associated Press reports.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the new service will become “the new home for the world’s most creative storytellers featuring exclusive original shows, movies and documentaries.”

Details: The service will be ad-free and available on demand with online and offline viewing.

The service will provide access to HBO, Showtime, Starz, CBS All Access and other streaming services (not including Netflix). Amazon and Hulu might be involved, according to The Verge.

“We designed a new TV experience where you can pay for only the channels you want, all in one app, with the password you already have,” said Apple’s Peter Stern. “Watch everything on demand and ad-free. Download your shows to take with you anywhere. Enjoy the highest quality picture and sound available.”

He added, “No more bouncing around from app to app.”

Content: Celebrities Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell joined Apple for the announcement.

We’ve reported on some of the new Apple original content before. Spielberg plans to launch his “Amazing Stories” show again for the service. Witherspoon, Carell and Aniston all agreed to appear on the show “The Morning Show” as well.

Apple reportedly spent $1 billion for its original TV and movies, which is less than Netflix and HBO spend on their content.
