Jan 29, 2019
Disney is about to be a zoo.
Shanghai Disney Resort announced Monday that there are plans to build a new theme park centered around “Zootopia,” which is the first for any Disney park.
- Disney said construction will begin later in 2019. The company has not announced an opening date yet.
- “Guests will be invited to experience the mammalian metropolis of Zootopia ‘where anyone can be anything,’ with a new major attraction that will seamlessly blend Disney storytelling and state-of-the-art technology to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life — including Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde,” said Disney’s Zootopia announcement, according to CNN. “Entertainment, merchandise and food and beverage offerings will invite guests to fully immerse themselves in the Academy-Award-winning animated movie.”

Why Shanghai?: Well, “Zootopia” was a major success in China, breaking records en route to become the country’s most successful animated feature film ever, CNN reports.
What to expect: The new park will include a mockup of the famous cityscape seen in the film. Fox News reports that there will probably be characters from the movie who will have face-to-face interaction.
Rumors: There have been plenty of rumors of a similar project coming to Walt Disney World, according to Fox News. But “Zootopia’s” popularity in China made it the clear choice.
